The 2012 Top Ten (or so)

Here is the "Top Ten 2012" List I gave to the great Brooklyn Vegan. I have no idea wether they will (or need to) print it. I hope they do - but here it is:

In No Particular Order - What I saw / heard this year that might have been from any year. My head doesn't have the clarity to entertain a list.

Modern Times - Charlie Chaplin - at Cinefamily LA

Will Johnson - Scorpion

He Can Jog - Milwaukee Pinebender (Virginia Is For Lovers And Other Stolen Phrases)

Rodolphe Kuffer - Leucippe - Cannot find much music from this guy - but check out Audiobulb Records

Vidro Azul podcast (from Lisbon) Love these DJ's. Love the music they play. I have no idea what they are saying but they sound so so so sexy.

Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water (Album) - Loved this when I was 16. Love it now.

Another Year - Mike Leigh (Film)

Please Give - Nicole Holofcener (Film)

Requiem For Larissa - Valentin Silvestrov

Myke Dodge Weiskopf - Shortwave Radio Archivist - This is quite amazing. Sometimes a great archivist is better than any self proclaimed "artist"

Mark.

Hi. My name's Nicholas. I've been a fan for a long time (early 90s).

I just found out about Don't Be A Stranger. Last year was sort of an 'out' year for me due to medical bullshit.

I don't know how you operate your blog - whether you like back and forth comments. So, whatever. Just best to you. Thanks for being an important part of my life.

Keep on.

Mark,

I've been a fan since the early 90s.

I just found out about Don't Be A Stranger. Waiting for it to arrive.

I don't know how you operate your blog in terms of back and forth discussion.

So, I'll just say thank you for your music. You've helped articulate a bunch of my soul, or whatever that should say.

If you ever want to cover anything off Fish Out of Water (somehow "Lucky Seven" comes to mind), I'll play keyboards.

I just stumbled across this blog and I'm so overjoyed that you also have a continuing fondness for "Fish Out of Water". Interestingly I was just asked to list my 20 Desert Island Discs (a bizarre collection that includes Donny Hathaway, Eno, Tribe Called Quest, Gang of Four, Steely Dan, Bauhaus, Blue Nile, Siousxie, "Quadrophenia", "Something Else" by The Kinks, and Prince among others - AMC's "Mercury" also made the cut - he added not knowing whether that would make you smile or snort), but I was most loudly lambasted for including Squire's album (which I first heard when I was ten). My only means of defending the choice of the Yes-man's opus to the uninitiated was to explain that it was incredibly lush, complex yet uncomplicated, gorgeous and did not waste a second of track time (although the lack of order to the rim clicks 1:15 in to "You By My Side" have always driven me crazy - I'm very symmetrical, apparently). Anyway, now I get to say to the Squire naysayers..."Fuck you! Mark Eitzel digs it, too!" And as a 16-year-old boy stuck deep inside a 48-year-old man, that makes me giggle a bit. Cheers!
